Hello! My name is Joe Smith, and I've been a volunteer here at Southend Hospital Radio 12 years.
The main full-time job, I work for British Airways as cabin crew at Heathrow airport. This gives me the opportunity to travel and stay all over the world. I've done this for eight years, and every day is still a challenge. I can go anywhere from Moscow to Manchester, New York to Newcastle, Paris to Peru! It’s challenging at times, and I work mainly in business and first class.
The airline I work for support my volunteer work here at the radio station, and always allows me to take every Tuesday off, so I can be here to present a programme. My company has also donated to the charity scheme that encourages staff to work in their local community; last year, British Airways donated £1,000 to Southend Hospital Radio after I applied for a grant under the scheme.
Alongside my work for BA, I also work part-time as a freelance voice-over artist. This is something that has developed directly from my volunteering at Southend Hospital Radio, and you may hear my voice popping up on websites, radio commercials, podcasts and promotional trails all over the place.
The most important part of being a member of Southend Hospital Radio for me is being able to connect with listeners, and hopefully raise a smile amongst patients that might be feeling a little lonely, or feeling low. That's what I try and achieve on Tuesday nights, and I hope you'll join me on air from 7 PM, now that you know all the secrets behind the microphone!
Tune in, and I'll do my best to make sure we have a bit of fun.
